Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, Kofi Adams, says the National Democratic Congress as a party did not fail Ghanaians.
On Friday, six ministerial nominees were approved by parliament following a shock defeat of the NDC side in what many have described as a ‘betrayal’ of the party’s cause after more than 10 NDC MPs allegedly voted with the ruling party.
The NDC had been planning on rejecting the ministerial nominees as a way of forcing the hand of the President to reduce his size of government.
According to Kofi Adams, while some commentators have sought to portray the incident as a betrayal by the entire NDC, the opposite was true.
He stressed that the NDC as a party still strongly stands by its policy position to get the President to reduce government size.
And while attempting to get this done through the vehicle of parliament has failed, the NDC will not relent till the President acts.
“It is not the NDC that failed Ghanaians and the people. The NDC appropriately as a political party presented its policy position on size of government and what have you, but I think on this occasion, we the MPs or some of us the MPs failed Ghanaians.
“I say so because the NDC as a corporate body still believes in downsizing government, but a particular vehicle that they would have used to communicate that clearly failed the NDC and by extension Ghanaians.
“Because, our presumptive leader even has moved further not just to talk about downsizing but he has even given a figure that when he becomes President in 2025, after we elect him in 2024, he is looking at not working with more than 60 ministers and deputies.
“So this commitment is still there. And like comrade Murtala was saying, we have shown it before, John Dramani Mahama has done that before so when he speaks there is that trust that will do it,” he said.
