The Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) says it is frustrated at the seeming lack of action in prosecuting directors of mining firm, Akonta Mining Limited, in spite of clear evidence of its infractions of the mining laws of the country.
The Police say investigations are still ongoing into activities of the mining firm, thought to be owned by the Ashanti Regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).
MCAG in a statement however, said Akonta Mining, accused of mining illegally in a prohibited forest reserve, clearly breached the Minerals & Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and should urgently be brought to book.
According to the MCAG, it is convinced that “there is and can be no conceivable justification for illegal mining to continue in Ghana,” and called on “all well-meaning Ghanaians, Civil Society Organisations to join hands with the media to help mount continued pressure on our leaders, Political, Technocrats, Traditional and Business to help save Ghana's water bodies and preserve our environment for current and future generations.”
