From July 1st 2023, public toilet operators will be operating under specific guidelines that will subject them to critical environmental assessment for ratings.
The move is part of plans to improve their operations in the country.
The new environmental policy, developed by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Public Health Department, is going to modernize public toilet management to enable the metro health directorate rate public toilet facilities in categories.
This will allow members of the public to have options in terms of choosing the cleanest facilities.
This was announced by the Director of the AMA Public Health Department, Florence Kuukyi at a two-day workshop organized by her department to train public toilet operators on the new policy which will be operational next month.
To ensure the smooth take-off of the programme, the Public Health Department has collaborated with Witties Ghana, a Ghanaian Company with a mission to improve sanitation, hygiene and environmental standards in public cacilities, businesses, communities, hospitals, restaurants, schools among others.
The company will conduct hygiene Quality Assurance Audit at various facilities to determine which are 5 Star public toilets and which ones do not meet standards that need to be closed down.
Witties Ghana and the public health inspectors will be monitoring their operations and conduct major hygiene audit to see which of them have improved service delivery and compliance that need to be ranked higher.
The star ratings will be displayed in front of every public toilet to enable the public see the standard of the facility they want to use.
The 64 participants were drawn from various sub metros within Accra and taken through environmental hygiene techniques.
