Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson has set in motion multiple legal processes including a fresh action at the Supreme Court in a bid to put his trial on hold.
He is demanding additional documents from state prosecutors to fully understand the case against him as well asking that his day to day trial be received.
Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is however accusing the legislator of engaging in a plot to prevent the court from hearing the case at all cost.
Lead Counsel for Quayson, Tsatsu Tsikata on Friday informed the court of the fresh processes.
The lawyer explained that they both have the potential of affecting the current criminal trial.
“We have filed an application for a stay of proceedings that has been set for Wednesday the 19th of July at the Court of Appeal. We have also filed in the Supreme Court , a motion invoking the supervisory jurisdiction for an order directed at this court to quash the decision made on the 16th of July and another to prohibit the court from proceeding with the case,” he stated.
JoyNews understand the application at the Court of Appeal is related to the decision of the High Court to hold the criminal trial on a day-to-day basis while that of the Supreme Court is in respect of having access to some evidence that the legislator believes the AG has failed to disclose.
The Attorney General urged the court to proceed with the case since neither the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal has issued any order halting the trial.
“Respectfully, the prayer before you is without any basis. And I am not surprised he has not referred you to any rule of law. It is an attempt to deny the court the right to hear the case.It is an attempt to prevent the continuation of the trial and I pray the court to disregard the request,“ he stated.
The court has adjourned proceedings to July 18 to deliver its ruling.
