The legal team of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has opposed the presence of COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George L. Asare and other witnesses present at his testimony today, Tuesday, September 12.
According to Kwame Gyan, the IGP's lawyer, that is unfair as the IGP was not invited to be present during the probe of the other witnesses.
He thus prayed the committee to ask the other witnesses to excuse the sitting.
Mr Charman and Honourable members, our first objection has to do with the presence in this room, at this time of the witnesses who previously were invited by this august committee and who have gone through the process of giving their own testimonies.
"We were given written notice on Friday to appear before this committee and the notice said we should note that all other witnesses who have attended the committee will be present and the meeting will be held in-camera. So our first objection has to do with the presence of the other witnesses," he said.
However, the Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea overruled the objection insisting the witnesses and their lawyers will not be allowed to question the IGP in public.
"We are not going to permit them to say one word when the Inspector General of Police is speaking," he said.
Dr George Akuffo Dampare was invited before the Ad-hoc committee on Friday, September 8.
This follows the accusations that have been levelled against him by the previous witnesses, which the committee believes must be addressed.
On Sunday, the chairman of the committee had indicated that the hearing would be done in-camera.
He insisted that there were issues in the hearing that needed to be prevented from coming out in the public to protect national security.
But this modality changed today as parts of the probe will be done publicly.
Addressing the committee a while ago, Mr Atta Akyea said issues bothering on national security will be referred for an in-camera session.
