Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticised the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, calling her names.
His criticism follows claims by the Chairperson that the EC is only undertaking the limited voters registration exercise at its district offices only because of budget limitations as approved by parliament.
Speaking on TV XYZ, Mr. Ablakwa denied the comments by Jean Mensa and challenged her to provide evidence.
“To start with, Ghana’s Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa does not have credibility... and I am totally appalled that such a high ranking public official would do this.”
“I challenge her to produce evidence, evidence that indeed she presented documents to parliament that she wanted to organise the limited voter’s registration at all polling stations and parliament denied her due to insufficient funds.”
“I challenge her, when did she ever make such a demand to parliament”? he quizzed.
Jean Mensa on Monday, September 18, 2023 made the claim while addressing the press following controversies surrounding the limited voters registration exercise.

In her address, she partly blamed parliament for the Commission’s struggles to decentralise its registration process due to the failure of the House to pass the new C.I that was presented for approval.
“As you are all aware, the Commission prepared a draft C.I for continuous registration in all district offices nationwide. This initiative started last year and the registration we were envisioning under the draft C.I was for a sustained long-term basis.
“Indeed, had the C.I been passed we would have had some six months this year to register voters at any time of their choice. Our 2023 budget and work plan were prepared along those lines. Our 2023 work-plan and budget were based on a continuous registration of voters in our district offices nationwide, we did not factor electoral area registration in our 2023 work plan and budget,” she explained.
