The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has asked the organisers of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration to furnish his office with evidence of police brutality during the protest.
According to him, since the exercise was held, the organisers have failed to provide any evidence to back their claims of police brutality and abuse.
Dr Dampare in a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union in Accra on Tuesday, October 24, said he is ready to investigate the matter anytime evidence is provided.
“As I speak, after months of completing that demonstration till today not a shred of evidence has been brought up to indicate that police brutalized them.”
The demonstration, which took place between Thursday, September 21 and Saturday, September 23, 2023 saw protesters, expressing their misgivings about some of the current happenings in the country.
They protested against the government’s economic policies and alleged corruption and had over 50 of their members arrested by the police.
The incident sparked outrage from Ghanaians, who accused the police of using excessive force against unarmed civilians.
However, in a statement, the police indicated that these protestors were taken into custody for unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act.
The police noted that the arrested persons disregarded court documents served on lawyers of the organisers, Democracy Hub, to refrain from embarking on the said demonstration.
But the IGP says his outfit is willing to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter should any evidence be provided.
