The Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to hold an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, January 29, to continue discussions with political parties regarding its proposal to change the date for the general elections.
The EC's proposal suggests shifting the date for both Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7.
While the Opposition National Democratic Congress opposes the change, citing concerns about organizing a smooth election within the proposed timeframe, the governing New Patriotic Party is yet to decide on the matter.
In a related development, the National Democratic Congress has reversed its decision to boycott IPAC meetings.
The party, through its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, communicated the decision in a statement dated Sunday, January 28, 2024.
IPAC meetings provide a platform for political parties to review election-related activities, express grievances, and offer constructive input.
The NDC had boycotted IPAC meetings in 2021, citing alleged bias and lack of transparency by the Jean Mensah-led Electoral Commission during the 2020 general elections.
