Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has called on continental bodies to host more sporting competitions in Accra, which has been declared the Sports City of Africa until the next African Games by the African Union.
The Yagaba-Kubori Member of Parliament is saying this on the back of Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games from the 5th to the 23rd of March 2024.
After a rocky start to the organization of the games, the Local Organizing Committee recovered and did a job that has attracted praise from many.
Speaking at the closing ceremony at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, Ussif expressed confidence that the facilities that hosted the African Games can also host other high-profile competitions.
“After the declaration of Accra as the Sports City of Africa from 2024 and beyond, I take this opportunity to invite confederations, federations and the International Olympic Committee to organise competitions here in Accra.
“I want to assure the good people of Ghana that we will build on the unprecedented success Ghana has achieved.”
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium was completed and hosted the track and field events, with new facilities also built at the Borteyman Sports Complex to host tennis, swimming, and others.
