The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has cautioned President Akufo-Addo against attempts to dictate his successor as he prepares to leave office.
In a direct message to the outgoing President, Mahama stressed that Mr Akufo-Addo's primary responsibility should be to oversee a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Mr Mahama emphasised that neither the NDC nor the Ghanaian people will tolerate any attempts by Akufo-Addo to impose his preferred successor on the nation.
He reassured that both the NDC and Ghanaians are fully prepared for the upcoming December elections and are committed to upholding the will of the people.
In a social media post on Monday, April 29, Mr Mahama urged Akufo-Addo to ensure a smooth transition of power, leaving behind a peaceful country as he inherited. He cautioned against any actions that could undermine the nation's stability.
"He also recently stated that he cannot be succeeded by somebody he has defeated in previous elections. This connotes an arrogant nature and smacks an inherently anti-democratic personality, undermining the fundamental principle of the peaceful transition of power."
"Nana Addo should be reminded that only the votes of the good people of Ghana and the will of the Almighty God will determine who succeeds him. This reaffirms the people's power in shaping our nation's future."
"Suppose we are to draw lessons from Ayawaso West Wuogon and the state-sponsored killing of eight innocent citizens during the 2020 election; we know that this President is capable of anything and would not hesitate to trample on Ghana's constitution to manipulate the process in favour of his preferred successor."
"I can assure him that Ghanaians and the National Democratic Congress will not allow this to happen. As I advised him in Damongo on Saturday, the best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent, and credible election," he posted on social media.
President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his stance against handing over the presidency to his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama.
During an address to the chiefs and people of Wa, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude for their support throughout his tenure.
He informed Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the paramount chief of the Waala traditional area, of his intention to return to the area with the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as his successor.
President Akufo-Addo clarified that he would not transfer power to John Dramani Mahama, whom he defeated and removed from office in 2016.
This stance has echoed a warning from Mr. Mahama, urging President Akufo-Addo to prioritise the peace and stability of the country.
