The Electoral Commission (EC) has affirmed that individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage will not incur any charges for the replacement of their voter identification (ID) cards.
In an official statement issued on Thursday, May 16, the EC underscored its commitment as a responsible institution in assisting all eligible voters to participate in the upcoming general election.
Acknowledging the significant challenges posed by the spillage on the affected individuals, the EC expressed its readiness to facilitate their participation in the forthcoming election.

The EC further announced that the process of replacing ID cards for those impacted by the spillage is scheduled to commence on May 30, ensuring ample time for affected individuals to obtain their new IDs.
"As a well-meaning Commission, it is our duty to support all eligible voters to vote in the upcoming general election. The replacement of the Voter ID Cards which is scheduled to commence on May 30, is intended to fulfill that duty. Recognising the untold hardship and economic loss suffered by the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Fifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them.
“In solidarity with the victims and as a gesture of goodwill, the Commission is happy to announce that replacement of voter ID cards for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage will be free of charge.”
This follows an appeal by Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide replacement voter ID cards free of charge to victims affected by the recent Akosombo dam spillage.
At a press conference held on Thursday, May 16, Mr. Kwetey emphasised the urgency of the matter and appealed for prompt and empathetic action from the EC to alleviate the burden faced by the affected individuals.
