The Awutu Senya East Constituency Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Delali Sewokpor, is calling on the police to thoroughly investigate matters in order not to perpetuate selective justice.
According to him, the party does not understand why the police would arrest the constituency organiser of the NDC while allowing the organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to go scot-free although they were both present during a scuffle that left some persons injured.
This follows the arrest of the party's constituency organiser, Daniel Techie Mensah and one other person after a member of the NPP was stabbed during an altercation.
Identified as Ato Koomson, son of NPP MP for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, the injured man is currently at the 37 Military Hospital receiving treatment after he was stabbed on one side of his chest.
Speaking to Joy News, Mr Sewokpor suggested that there appears to be some partiality in dealing with the issue. He explained that the police only arrested the NDC constituency organiser because he was the leader present when the scuffle occurred.
He argued that although NPP executives were also present during the event, they were not arrested.
“It is so surprising that the police have arrested the constituency organiser of the NDC and the reason why he was arrested was the fact that he was the leader of the NDC when the scuffle or the incident happened.
“Yet, the constituency secretary of the NPP who was telling us that he was privy to what actually happened is still walking freely. It becomes a bit unacceptable living in this country where it looks like there is different set of rules for different people,” he said.
Mr Sewokpor alleged that in the lead-up to the 2020 elections, Ato Koomson, the son of the MP and Minister of Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson, led thugs to attack NDC members.
He said an NDC member who tried to protect the victims was arrested by the police and is currently in detention, while Ato Koomson went scot-free.
On the back of this, he said “The police must not be selective when exacting discipline.”
Meanwhile, the police has arrested three individuals at Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region for allegedly possessing firearms without lawful authority. The police mentioned the suspects as Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, Mustapha Mohammed and Abdul Aziz Musah.
Joy News has identified Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, to be the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
