President Nana Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process and transfer of power during the 2024 general elections.
He stressed the importance of a peaceful process, highlighting Ghana's role as a model of democracy for Africa and the world.
In his address at the Ghana Report Summit held in Accra, themed "Dealing with Misinformation and Disinformation – Election 2024," President Akufo-Addo underscored the significance of vigilance in the lead-up to the elections.
He urged the media and all citizens to remain alert and proactive in combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation, stressing that their impact on the electoral process cannot be underestimated.
President Akufo-Addo called on the media to play a crucial role in ensuring accurate information dissemination.
He noted that misinformation and disinformation could undermine the credibility of the elections and create unnecessary tensions.
Therefore, he stressed the need for responsible journalism and fact-checking to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Furthermore, the President advised against actions that could escalate tensions in the country.
He urged Ghanaians to contribute to the peace and stability of the nation by fostering a calm and respectful environment.
President Akufo-Addo emphasised that the success of the elections depends on the collective efforts of all citizens to uphold peace and order.
“The peaceful transition of power is evidenced by the changes in the national political leadership, from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and back, underscores the maturity of our democratic institutions and the resilience of our electoral process."
“Our democratic journey has been made possible by the active participation of the citizenry. A robust civil society and a free media. These elements reinforce collectively, Ghana’s reputation as a stable democratic nation.
"It is within this context that, we must address the growing challenge of misinformation and disinformation which threatens, and undermines the democratic gains we have made,” President Akufo-Addo said.
