The flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to spearhead the installation of 50,000 CCTV cameras across Ghana’s major towns to enhance security and reduce crime.
He announced this initiative during his campaign tour of the Dome-Kwabenya constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Dr Bawumia stated that a study by security agencies indicated the need for 50,000 CCTV cameras to effectively monitor roads in regional and district capitals.
He acknowledged that while the government has already begun installing CCTV cameras, not all areas have been covered. This new pledge aims to bridge that gap, providing comprehensive surveillance across key locations.
“We are going to provide 50,000 CCTV cameras so that the police can have visibility for every movement because we don’t have many police officers,” he explained.
In addition to his security plans, Dr Bawumia advocated for a “Buy Ghana First” policy to boost local production and create jobs.
He believes that increasing the consumption of locally produced goods will drive business growth and expand employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
During his campaign tour, Dr Bawumia engaged with various community leaders, including clergy, imams, and chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area.
Former Speaker of Parliament Mike Ocquaye praised Dr Bawumia’s intellectual abilities and contributions to the party, referring to his pivotal role in past electoral matters.
Dr Bawumia reiterated the NPP government’s commitment to security, economic development, and job creation, highlighting these initiatives as key components of his vision for a prosperous and secure Ghana.
