The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has refuted reports that a 62-year-old woman was arrested during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration in Accra.
The demonstrations, which aimed to protest against illegal mining, economic hardship and other pertinent issues of national importance, saw several arrests as police clashed with the protesters.
However, Mr Nkansah categorically denied the claim that the elderly woman in question was among those detained, describing the reports as false and misleading.
Nkansah explained that while several individuals were taken into custody for obstructing traffic and engaging in unlawful activities during the protest, no person fitting the description of the 62-year-old woman was arrested.
According to him, the old woman was rather escorted by the police to secure an Uber ride.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 23, he urged the public and the media to verify information before circulating such stories, warning that the spread of false claims could unnecessarily escalate tensions between law enforcement and protesters.
"Kindly ignore the false narrative that a 62-year-old woman was arrested during the demonstration."
"When the protesters started getting violent, the woman was escorted out of the scene. She said she wanted an Uber to her destination and the Police assisted her," he posted.
