The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC-Ghana has announced its intention to join the nationwide strike set to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
This decision was communicated in a letter to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company on Tuesday, October 8.
PUWU clarified that all its members, except those working in Production and Maintenance Units, would participate in the industrial action.

This strike aligns with the broader efforts of organised labour to pile pressure on the government to declare a state of emergency to tackle the escalating illegal mining crisis, commonly known as galamsey.
The decision to strike reflects frustrations within organised labour regarding the government's perceived inaction on pressing national issues.
The ongoing illegal mining crisis has raised significant environmental concerns, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
By joining this strike, PUWU aims to highlight the critical need for action against illegal mining, which has caused extensive damage to the country's natural resources.
“At a meeting held on Tuesday, 01 October 2024, in the Conference Room of the Hall of Trades Union in Accra, the leadership of organised labour decided to embark on a nationwide strike action against issues pertaining to illegal small-scale mining."
“This decision was reinforced by organised labour at its meeting held on October 07, 2024, at the hall of Trades Union. In this regard, we hereby write to officially notify you that PUWU, and all its members, except production and maintenance units shall join in this nationwide strike," the statement stated.
