The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is developing a framework for disability data collection that will guide Ministries, Departments and Agencies to provide enhanced service delivery and promote the inclusion and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The project seeks to integrate disability considerations into data collection and analysis processes at the national and sub-national levels.
Ms Sarah Woode, Project coordinator at a validation workshop on the National Disability Data Framework said earlier assessments showed significant gaps in how data is collected, analysed and reported.
The project done in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with funding from the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) aims to establish and comprehensive and systematic approach to the collection, analysis, and utilization of disability-related data.
Participants from the various Ministries, departments, agencies, nongovernmental organisations and organisations for persons with disabilities deliberated guidelines for disability data collection, techniques of data collection, harmonisation of data on disability and the implementation of the national disability framework.
The GSS said the data gap on disability often led to the exclusion of persons with disabilities from development planning and the provision of essential social services.
