Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has clarified comments he made during a press conference, stating he did not mean to trivialize the issue of self-harm.
The incident occurred after City surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday. During his post-match interview with Amazon Prime, scratches were visible on Guardiola’s forehead.
When later asked by reporters about a mark on his nose, Guardiola mimicked a scratching motion and explained, "With my finger, my nail." He then added, “I want to harm myself,” before laughing and leaving the news conference.
In a statement posted on his official accounts on X and Instagram, Guardiola addressed the remarks:
"I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference about a scratch on my face. I explained it was caused accidentally by a sharp fingernail. My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”
Guardiola also acknowledged the prevalence of mental health struggles and highlighted the Samaritans charity as a resource for those seeking support.
The draw against Feyenoord ended City’s five-game losing streak but extended their winless run since a 1-0 victory over Southampton on 26 October.
Manchester City are currently 15th in the Champions League standings and second in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Liverpool. They face a crucial match against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
