The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders, Mahama Iddrisu, has called on government to desist from engaging vigilante groups in the guise of national security on election day.
Speaking on Tuesday, 3 December, he urged authorities to act within the confines of the law to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
According to him, the deployment of such groups threatens the credibility and stability of the nation’s elections.
Alhaji Iddrisu stated that actions undermining Ghana’s electoral laws were detrimental to the country’s democratic principles.
He stated that deploying vigilante groups or party foot soldiers under the pretext of national security is an affront to the rule of law.
Mr Mahama urged the government to prioritise the interest of the nation above partisan politics and refrain from acts that could jeopardise the integrity of the elections.
He further accused the government of being desperate to retain power at all costs.
“The government knows its days are numbered, and in its desperation, it is resorting to actions that are not in the best interest of Ghana’s democracy,” he said.
Alhaji Iddrisu warned that such tactics could lead to unnecessary tension and conflict, undermining the peace the country has worked hard to maintain.
The NDC Council of Elders reiterated their commitment to upholding democratic values and urged all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and security agencies, to remain neutral and professional.
They called on Ghanaians to be vigilant and ensure that the electoral process is conducted transparently, fairly, and peacefully, safeguarding the nation’s democratic future.
