The outgoing Majority leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says the true colours of the incoming government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will soon be realized when they assume power in the next few days.
According to him, democracy has experienced its best under the leadership of the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He was speaking in parliament after the President delivered his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) to parliament on Friday, January 3.
“Today, we are being told that there is a new hope, that’s no problem, it is supposed to be so. But soon, we will see the true colours of the umbrella,” he noted.
He further warned the NDC’s Members of Parliament-elect that all eyes will be on them to see if there will be a significant transformation in their governance over the next four years, recalling and highlighting the ruling government’s implemented initiatives.
“I would want to say to my colleagues that you are yet to take over, we will be watching you for the next four years, and if indeed you have transformed, we will see with our naked eyes. This is a government that came into office and faced major challenges that confronted the world all over but demonstrated resilience. This is a government that ensured that in spite of COVID, all government sector workers were paid. This is the government that kept the lights on. This is the government that over 5.7 million Ghanaians had access to education,” he mentioned.
Afenyo-Markin continued to recall the struggles he faced to complete his secondary education, acknowledging the Free SHS and its related policies implemented by the ruling party.
He also added that posterity will be the ultimate judge, as the ruling party has been voted out in the just-ended 2024 general elections.
“I repeat, soon and very soon, the Ghanaian people will see the true colours of the umbrella. I rest my case,” he concluded.
