John Dramani Mahama has officially assumed office as Ghana’s sixth President of the Fourth Republic, taking the oath of allegiance and the presidential oath to begin his term.
The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, took place on Tuesday, 7th January 2025, at Parliament and the iconic Black Star Square in Accra.
Earlier in the ceremony, Ghana’s first female Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, took the oath of office and the vice-presidential oath, marking another historic moment in the nation’s political history.
This marks a significant return to the presidency for John Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s fourth President of the Fourth Republic from 7th January 2013 to 6th January 2017.
Notably, he becomes the first President under the Fourth Republic to lose an election and later reclaim the presidency. His return to office follows two subsequent election campaigns, culminating in a resounding victory.
