The Minister nominee for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to establish a Royal Academy for traditional rulers if confirmed as minister.
He explained that the academy will form part of the University of Local Governance Studies (ULGS), which is yet to be established. The academy aims to provide advanced training for traditional rulers, helping them acquire the necessary skills to effectively address issues impacting their communities.
"Now that we have the opportunity to establish our own University for Local Governance Studies, one of the courses proposed is a Royal Academy for Chiefs," Ibrahim said.
The incoming minister believes that this initiative will better equip traditional leaders to manage customary challenges, such as land disputes and chieftaincy conflicts, in their communities.
He added that it is the state's responsibility, given the sensitive roles traditional rulers play, to provide capacity training for them. "The state will facilitate training, seminars, and courses on customary law for our chiefs and queens" under the Royal Academy programme.
By enhancing their knowledge and understanding of conflicts, the Royal Academy aims to address ongoing problems in the chieftaincy system and contribute more effectively to local governance.
