The Majority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated unequivocally that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not condone violence in any form.
Addressing the media in the wake of the recent clash in Obuasi, Dr Forson expressed the party's profound regret over the incident, which claimed nine lives and left several individuals injured.
He assured the public that, following the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, an impartial and thorough investigation would be conducted.
“It is deeply regrettable that victims have sustained various injuries, and the NDC strongly condemns all forms of violence,” Dr Forson stated.
He reaffirmed the President's commitment to ensuring justice, saying, “The President has directed that a comprehensive investigation be carried out, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served.”
Dr Forson criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament for attempting to politicise the tragic event.
He accused the NPP of making unfounded claims that the miners’ deaths were politically motivated.
“The NPP is misleading the public with their false claims that this incident was politically motivated,” Dr Forson said. “There is no evidence to support such accusations, and this is nothing more than a reckless attempt to exploit a national tragedy for political gain.”
The Majority Leader expressed disappointment in the NPP’s approach, noting that they had chosen to engage in divisive politics rather than standing in solidarity with the bereaved families.
“Instead of offering condolences and supporting the victims’ families, the NPP is playing divisive political games. This is not the time for such behaviour,” he stated.
Dr Forson suggested that the NPP’s actions reflected their frustration following their electoral defeat.
“The NPP is clearly still struggling with the results of the last election. Rather than focusing on the issues that matter to the people, they are playing petty politics,” he remarked.
He concluded by reassuring Ghanaians of the integrity of the investigation into the Obuasi incident.
“We assure the people of Ghana that the investigation will be fair, transparent, and thorough,” he said.
“The NDC remains fully committed to peace, justice, and the rule of law, and we will continue to work towards ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for all.”
