The 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Effutu Constituency, has condemned action of some party supporters who vandalised the party office in Winneba.
Dr James Kofi Annan said the violent act by the youth was unfortunate and stressed that it was wrong for them to have engaged in that act.
Abhorring the act, he told the Media in an interview that he had not submitted his name to President John Dramani Mahama for ministerial appointment.
“There is a formula around the appointment of Ministers and about 95 percent of the ministers appointed are members of parliament and that of the Regional Ministers are also Regional Executives.
Dr Annan described the supporters’ action as “irresponsible and reckless” and declared his “utmost and unwavering” support for the President and the NDC party.
He urged the supporters to “be measured in their expectations and to exercise maximum restraint.”
Dr Annan further urged party supporters not to associate his name with such acts but rather focus on supporting the President and the party to reset the country.
He reiterated that the President had the sole prerogative to appoint individuals to high offices and expressed his trust in his decisions.
“I wish to reiterate that the responsibility to appoint individuals to high offices is the sole prerogative of the President…we worked hard to bring the party into office, and I believe whatever decision the President or the party takes, is done in the good interest of the party and in the spirit of resetting our country,” Dr Annan stated.
Some aggrieved youth of the NDC Party in the Effutu Constituency, wearing red head and arm bands and chanting the party songs, on Friday January 24, between 11 am and 12 pm hours, stormed the premises of the office and started causing damage to the property.
They vandalised a wooden structure, destroyed the trap door of the office and scattered some plastic chairs and later burnt some items.
In an interview with some of them, they stated that Dr Annan had suffered a lot and needed to be given a ministerial appointment, or the party must forget about the Effutu Constituency.
