The Commercial Drivers Association in Kumasi has expressed displeasure against the government’s planned 10% increase in motor insurance premium, which is set to take effect next month.
The group claims members were not consulted and are yet to appreciate the rationale for the increase.
Leaders say the increase would have a devastating impact on their businesses and livelihoods.
Emmanuel Osei Yeboah is the leader of the group. He says, "We were not consulted before the decision was taken, and we were not given any reason for the increase."
"We are calling on the government to reconsider the decision and engage with us in a dialogue to find a solution that would be beneficial to all parties involved," he added.
The association also claimed that the increase would lead to a rise in transportation costs, which would ultimately be passed on to consumers.
The planned increase in motor insurance premium has been met with widespread criticism from various stakeholders, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
The Commercial Vehicle Drivers Association in Kumasi has vowed to continue to fight against the planned increase, and has called on the government to reconsider the decision.
