Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has urged the Deputy Minister-designate for Agriculture, John Dumelo, to empower young people to pursue careers in agriculture.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, the lawyer praised President John Mahama for selecting Mr Dumelo for the position, describing him as a good candidate.
Mr. Dumelo, a commercial farmer and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, was encouraged by Mr. Kpebu to use his influence to motivate more young Ghanaians to prioritise farming.
"Dumelo, being a very young person, I believe his presence there will hopefully inspire more young people to go into agriculture," he said.
Although Mr. Kpebu expressed some surprise at Mr. Dumelo's nomination, he believes that Dumelo will leave a lasting legacy in the agriculture sector by initiating impactful programmes. "With Dumelo's appointment, they (Ministry of Agriculture) will likely do much more, especially for young people involved in farming.
"We should create special programmes to teach these young people how to farm, which will motivate the unemployed and encourage them to join associations and cluster groups to farm. This will help boost agricultural productivity," he added.
Mr. Kpebu also emphasised that, with Ghana being an agricultural hub rich in arable land, agriculture should be prioritised to address food insecurity and unemployment.
John Dumelo is also a Ghanaian actor and was appointed as the Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture. The announcement was made on 5 February 2025 by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama.
