Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei-Asare, has called for Ghana to appoint its first female Finance Minister, stressing the crucial role women play in national development.

Speaking in commemoration of International Women's Day, Madam Osei-Asare, who is set to become the first female Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, stated that the time for this milestone is now.

“We have made significant progress in empowering women. We have had a female Chief Justice and other high-ranking women in leadership. However, what is missing is a female Finance Minister and I strongly believe that very soon, Ghana will have its first woman in that role,” she said on Wednesday, March 12.

Highlighting the contributions of women to the economy, she urged for greater recognition rather than special privileges, noting that “Women contribute immensely to the economy and the nation as a whole. We are not asking for handouts or favours—just the acknowledgment of our role and equal opportunities."

Osei-Asare pointed out the gender imbalance in decision-making, noting that despite women making up more than 50% of the population, men often dominate discussions on women's issues. She called for inclusivity and fairness in leadership, stressing that women are not only peacemakers but also capable of making a significant difference.

“It’s not about competing with men; it’s about ensuring that, together, we create a better world for everyone,” she added.
