Security Analyst Professor Kwesi Aning has praised former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare for his transformative leadership and the humane approach he brought to the Ghana Police Service.
His remarks come in response to the appointment of COP Yohuno as the new IGP by President Mahama.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, Prof. Aning highlighted several key achievements during Dr. Dampare’s tenure.
He noted the former IGP’s quick and effective responses to national crises and the compassionate approach he introduced within the police force.
Prof. Aning believes that Dr. Dampare’s leadership will be remembered for its role in reducing crime and improving the relationship between the police and the public.
“Dr. Dampare’s leadership led to a noticeable transformation in the police force,” Prof. Aning stated.
“Police officers became more disciplined and displayed a better attitude towards the public, people were held accountable for their actions when they violated the rules, which helped create a more trustworthy relationship between the police and the citizens they serve.” he added.
However, Prof. Aning acknowledged that reactions to Dr. Dampare’s tenure were mixed.
"Following the announcement of the new IGP, some police officers celebrated the transition by dancing and waving white handkerchiefs, while others expressed more reserved reactions" he said.
This variation in response, according to Prof. Aning, reflected the differing opinions within the police task force about Dr. Dampare's leadership.
Prof. Aning praised Dr. Dampare for the positive changes he brought to the police service, particularly in terms of improving police discipline, public relations, and overall police performance.
He also recognised that transitions in leadership often bring about a range of emotions, both within the police service and the public.
"There are several reasons on which we can confidently say, well done to him,” Prof. Aning concluded.
