President John Mahama has announced plans to ease congestion in the capital by developing a new city to serve as a complementary administrative and commercial hub.
President Mahama unveiled plans to establish a new administrative city outside the Greater Accra Region during a meeting with the European Union Ambassador and the EU Chamber of Commerce on May 28, 2024, in the buildup to the election 2024.
This initiative according to him aims to speed up government services and address the severe congestion in the capital.
Speaking during a Thank You tour at Dodowa in the Greater Accra region, President Mahama outlined his vision to relocate selected government ministries and agencies to the proposed city, which will be supported by modern infrastructure, including an expressway and a railway line directly linking it to Accra.
“Accra is overstretched,” Mr Mahama stated. “The capital is facing mounting pressure from rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure. It is time we think long-term and plan for a new city that can ease this burden.”
He emphasised that the initiative will also stimulate economic activity and open up new areas for investment and housing.
