The Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Minister for Transport, Hassan Tampuli, has made claims that former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia personally arranged for the sureties that secured the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
His comments follow the arrest of Chairman Wontumi, who was arrested earlier this week and interrogated by EOCO, was later granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified, a condition party members claim is excessive and politically motivated.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, together with the Minority Leader, was granted access to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in May 30, 2025.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, May 31, Mr Tampuli made it clear that the former Vice-President intervened directly to assist the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was recently arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial misconduct.
“Let me put this on record,” Mr Tampuli said. “Dr Bawumia has arranged the sureties for the release of Chairman Wontumi. That has been done. His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made arrangements for the sureties.”
