President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to launch a Ghana Labour Export Programme aimed at providing employment opportunities for young professionals abroad while addressing global labour shortages.
Speaking during his Thank Your in the Ahafo Region, on Saturday, May 31, President Mahama revealed that the government is in advanced negotiations with several countries to secure fixed-term contract jobs for Ghanaian workers in various skilled and semi-skilled sectors.
“We will soon launch a Ghana Labour Export Programme,” he stated.
“There are labour shortages in many countries across the world. We are negotiating with several of those countries to export some of our professionals to work on fixed-term contracts abroad.”
Mr Mahama explained that the programme will include opportunities for agricultural workers, construction workers, electricians, welders, mechanics, health workers, chefs and caterers, drivers, machine operators, warehouse supervisors, and other skilled personnel.
According to the President, one such agreement has already been secured. “A contract has already been signed with one country for the export of 2,000 temporary workers,” he revealed.
He added that the selection of candidates will be fair and inclusive, drawing qualified young people from all 16 regions of Ghana, including Ahafo.
