President John Mahama has announced plans to elevate selected nursing and midwifery colleges across Ghana to degree-awarding institutions, as part of broader efforts to enhance tertiary education and healthcare delivery.
Speaking during his Thank You tour in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, 31 May, Mr Mahama reiterated his intention to bridge educational disparities, particularly in less-served regions of the country.
He outlined the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s commitment to increasing access to quality higher education through strategic infrastructure investments.
“We remain committed to expanding tertiary education, especially in underserved regions. In line with this, the NDC government will establish a university in the Ahafo Region to offer world-class programmes in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences,” he declared.
Mr Mahama stressed that upgrading health training institutions to degree-awarding status would improve the calibre of nursing and midwifery education while contributing to the overall strengthening of the healthcare system.
“We will upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across the region into degree-awarding institutions. And we will continue the distribution of buses to SHSs and health training institutions to help academic operations,” he noted.
He further assured the public that logistical support for schools, including the ongoing distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training colleges, would be sustained to address transportation difficulties and enhance teaching and learning environments across the country.
