The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Ghana Police Service for what it describes as deliberate inaction that is preventing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding outstanding results in the Ablekuma North constituency.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, June 17, after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, alleged that the Police Service is deliberately obstructing the EC’s efforts by refusing to provide security to finalise collation of three outstanding polling station results.
“We express our dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Ghana Police Service for failing to provide security for the Electoral Commission to conclude the outstanding three polling station results at Ablekuma North,” Mr Kodua stated.
According to him, both the NPP and EC had previously written to the Police requesting protection to complete the process.
While the EC responded positively, stating its readiness to proceed once security was assured, the Ghana Police Service declined, citing a supposed pending Supreme Court case, allegedly flagged by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“But the EC has made it clear that there is no matter pending before the Supreme Court to warrant this excuse by the Police,” he added.
Mr Kodua accused the Police and the Attorney General of acting under instructions from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to delay or frustrate the finalisation of the results.
“If the NDC had genuinely won the Ablekuma North seat, wouldn't they have demanded that the Police protect the EC to complete the exercise?” he asked.
The EC was earlier ordered by the High Court to complete the collation exercise in the constituency. The NPP insists that there is no legal impediment preventing this and is demanding that the Police Service act immediately to ensure the EC can carry out its mandate.
