Music icon Okyeame Kwame delivered a powerful declaration of identity and purpose on last night’s edition of Joy Prime’s Prime Time Show, stating boldly, “I look at myself as an intelligent, elegant African.”
In a candid conversation with host George Quaye, the award-winning rapper and entrepreneur reflected on his journey toward becoming brand-conscious and how that has reshaped his image, career, and public persona.
“Since I became brand conscious, I realised that I cannot sell anything except what I already am,” he said.
“Because in the final analysis of branding, what you say you are, and how you want people to see you, is not the same as who you really are.”
He explained that authenticity is the soul of any lasting brand, cautioning that anyone who fakes their identity for the sake of appearance will eventually be exposed.
“Every brand has one enemy — time. If you’re faking it, after a while, you’ll get tired, or you’ll do something that breaks the illusion.”
It was through this deep self-awareness that Okyeame Kwame came to embrace his identity not just as an artist, but as a cultural symbol.
“I have to express myself. And so I look at myself as an intelligent, elegant African. When I’m dressing, that’s what I try to communicate.”
Okyeame Kwame, who is widely celebrated for his consistency, sartorial flair, and pan-African advocacy, used the platform to reaffirm that self-knowledge is the foundation of great branding, not gimmicks or trend-chasing.
His message was clear: own who you are, and the world will take notice.
