The Eastern South Regional Police Command has successfully secured an arrest warrant for suspects involved in the fatal shooting of Daniel Amekudzi, which occurred in Attakrom-Amanfro near Nsawam on Friday, June 27, 2025.
The warrant, issued by the Nsawam Circuit Court on July 3, targets suspect Francis Sakyi, also known as Nana Kofi Akotua and two other individuals who are currently at large.
Preliminary police investigations have established that the tragic incident unfolded during a funeral procession.
Suspect Francis Sakyi and his two accomplices were part of a group of mourners transporting a body in a convoy from Nsawam to Aburi, amidst the customary firing of musketry.
Upon reaching Attakrom-Amanfro, a misunderstanding escalated into a violent confrontation between the mourners and some youth from the town.
This altercation regrettably led to the shooting and subsequent death of Daniel Amekudzi, a resident of Attakrom-Amanfro.
The police believe that Francis Sakyi and the two unnamed suspects are currently in hiding in areas such as Aburi, Mempeasem, or Kitasi.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command is now appealing to the public for assistance in apprehending them.
"We would like to urge anyone with relevant information that could lead to the arrest of suspect Francis Sakyi, alias Nana Kofi Akotuah and the two others to report to the nearest police station or contact the Police Command Centre on 191, 112 (18555 MTN)," stated ASP Foster Owusu, Public Affairs Unit, Eastern South Region, in a statement on July 4.
The Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that justice is served for Daniel Amekudzi and his family.
They have also called for calm among the bereaved family, the youth of Attakrom-Amanfro, and the general public as investigations continue.
This incident highlights the dangers that can arise from public gatherings if not properly managed, especially when traditional practices involving firearms are observed.
The police's swift action in obtaining an arrest warrant signals their determination to bring those responsible to justice.
