The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffuor Awuah, has called for the involvement of independent bodies and impartial individuals in resolving the ongoing dispute over the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
"There is a need for an arbitrator or a mediator in this whole thing because the EC itself is buckling under pressure," he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, July 5.
The MP also warned against leaving the matter solely in the hands of politicians, stressing that such an approach risks reducing the issue to partisan interest rather than safeguarding democratic principles.
"I don't think that we should allow politicians to only own this process because it thus appears that we seem to have trusted our politicians with so much that we look in isolation, thinking that they are going to do right. I am a politician, but I keep saying we need to get the involvement of everybody," he said.
Mr Baffuor Awuah maintained that the politicisation of the issue would do more harm than good, especially at a time when public trust in the electoral system must be preserved.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is facing mounting criticism over its decision to re-run the 2024 parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
While the EC claims it can recount results from 43 out of 62 polling stations previously omitted, it insists that a re-run is required in the remaining 19, an explanation the NPP and other critics have rejected.
