Parliament has adjourned sitting to Tuesday, 8th July 2025, following the sudden passing of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, after a short illness.
The details surrounding his death have not been officially disclosed. However, Joy News' Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent, Kweku Asante, reports that the late MP was present in Parliament as recently as last week, making the news all the more shocking to colleagues and constituents alike.
Mr Kumi, a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was widely respected across the House for his insight and commitment to parliamentary work.
His passing has been described as a significant loss to both the NPP and Parliament, where his contributions, particularly on issues of national development and governance, will be sorely missed.

In a brief address, the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to Mr Kumi’s family, the people of Akwatia, and the entire NPP fraternity.
"The House is accordingly adjourned until Tuesday, 8th July 2025, at 2:00 in the afternoon," he declared.
Tributes from MPs across the political divide have poured in, with many praising his dedication, humility, and service to his constituents.
His sudden death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found Kumi guilty after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.
The court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court's authority.
