Akwapem North MP, Sammi Awuku, has taken a swipe at the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing it of prioritising public relations and image-building over addressing the real needs of Ghanaians.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Mr Awuku argued that the current administration’s policies and pronouncements have failed to reflect in the lives of ordinary citizens, who continue to endure significant economic hardship.
He cited rising utility tariffs and the introduction of the GH¢1 Fuel Levy as evidence of the government’s detachment from the everyday struggles of the population.
“Electricity tariffs went up by 11% in 2024 and have further increased by over 17% in July 2025,” he noted. “Water tariffs have also seen a 6% hike. These increases show a clear disconnect between government rhetoric and the reality on the ground,” he added.
Mr Awuku also criticised the government’s recent announcement that it had scrapped fuel allocations for public appointees, calling the move disingenuous.
“I see a trend. We have said that this government is a government of three things: P.R., optics, and settings,” he said.
“They say they’ve scrapped the fuel allocation for appointees, yet we see active fuel depots at Jubilee House and Osu Castle serving individuals, including National Security operatives, who may not even qualify for such benefits.”
He concluded by accusing the government of hypocrisy in its implementation of austerity measures: “It is like the Ghanaian is being asked to tighten her belt, while the government uses elastic around its waist.”
