Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Ghanaian Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, describing the news as a “thunderbolt”.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 28, the former President conveyed his shock, noting that he had not been aware of any prior illness, making the announcement of the artist’s death all the more devastating.
“Daddy Lumba, an iconic and highly-talented musician of our times, surely captivated the hearts and minds of many in Ghana, and indeed, many Highlife enthusiasts the world over,” Mr Kufuor remarked.
“His peculiar voice and lyrics were thrilling, transcendental, and enjoyable. I count myself as one of his favourite devotees.”
Mr Kufuor, who served as President of Ghana from 2001 to 2009, revealed a personal connection to the late musician, highlighting his appreciation for Lumba’s artistry and his regular attendance at the singer’s acclaimed end-of-year Night of the Legends concerts, to which he was often personally invited.
As tributes continue to pour in across the nation and beyond, the former President urged Ghanaians to celebrate Daddy Lumba’s remarkable life and achievements.
“May we be consoled that he was a precious gift of Our Creator to us all to enjoy while he was with us here on earth,” he stated.
Mr Kufuor extended sincere condolences to Daddy Lumba’s widow, children, and extended family, wishing them strength and comfort in this period of mourning.
“May The Almighty God give him a befitting rest in His bosom,” he added, concluding with the poignant Akan farewell, “Dammirifa Due, Daddy Lumba eee!!!”
