The Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the Volta region, Killian Donkor, has led the clearance of refuse dumps that had been left unattended for more than 30 years in the municipality.
According to him, the move is a major step towards improving sanitation in the Kpando township and the municipality at large.
The waste sites, located at Gabi Agorneme, Kudzra, and Gbefi, had long been an eyesore and a breeding ground for disease, Mr. Donkor told Adom TV.
He mentioned that the removal forms part of a broader sanitation improvement initiative by the Kpando Municipal Assembly, aimed at safeguarding public health, restoring environmental cleanliness, and enhancing the municipality’s image.
Mr. Donkor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable waste management, revealing plans to introduce modern waste collection points and launch public education campaigns on proper disposal practices.
Residents have welcomed the intervention, saying the decades-old dumps posed serious health risks, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water and decomposing waste increased the spread of cholera and other diseases.
The Municipal Environmental Health boss, Mr Peter Pariki-Kwashie, also praised the move, describing the refuse dumps as a public health hazard and a source of air pollution due to their offensive odour.
He commended the MCE for the commitment to tackling sanitation challenges in the area.
Kpando is one of the fastest-growing communities in the Volta Region, with a rising population and expanding economic activities, including education, agriculture, and aquaculture.
