Ghana’s Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has announced plans to meet with the Labour Commission following the recent assault on a nurse at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.
The Minister said the engagement would seek advice on the incident and explore measures to strengthen worker safety nationwide.
Dr Pelpuo disclosed this when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday to answer questions on financial irregularities cited in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report.
His announcement follows an earlier statement by the Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who condemned the attack, pledged to settle the victim’s medical bills, and replace her stolen phone.
Responding to a question from PAC Chairperson and Atiwa East MP, Madam Abena Osei Asare, Dr Pelpuo assured that his Ministry would introduce safeguards to protect workers and enhance the capacity of the Labour Commission to handle such cases across the regions.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has set up a committee to investigate the incident, including security lapses at the hospital and reported delays in patient care.
The Ridge Hospital management has since provided the assaulted nurse with a replacement phone and GH₵800 cash support for her recovery.
The Parliamentary Health Committee has also condemned the assault, attributing gaps in health sector recruitment under the previous administration as a factor that worsened security challenges in health facilities.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for stricter security measures in hospitals and greater respect for healthcare professionals.
