One person is battling for his life after being inflicted with machete wounds in a clash between youth groups of Nwamasi and Kokode in the Kwadaso Municipality of Ashanti Region.
The long-standing feud was reignited at a funeral in Agric Nzema within the municipality, where members of the two groups met.
The disturbances began on Saturday, August 23, when a confrontation occurred between two groups from Nwamasi and Kokode.
It took police from the Ashanti Central Regional Command to calm tempers and prevent a clash between the groups.
But on Sunday evening, some armed men believed to be members of the gang from Kokode launched an attack on the opposing group.
According to eyewitnesses, attackers stormed the Nwamase community with machetes and other weapons.
The injured, whose name is known as Emma, was reportedly assaulted in his home and severely wounded, before being rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
“The attackers unleashed terror on the streets. Emma was severely wounded, and we are hoping he makes it,” said Kofi Agyapong, Assemblyman for the Nwamasi Electoral Area.
“In fact, this is a long-standing feud, and today’s incident appears to be part of a chain of reprisals,” he revealed.
Police were later deployed to the area to restore order.
Though calm has been restored, residents of both communities live in fear as the feuding factions have intentions of further attacks.
The Kwadaso Municipal Security Council is expected to step up efforts to halt further reprisals.
