The Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has outlined fresh measures to address the violent clashes in Gbenyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, which have left at least ten people dead and twelve others injured.
The conflict, believed to stem from a protracted land dispute, has persisted despite the deployment of police and military personnel to the area.
On Sunday, August 24, five men were confirmed dead, with six others seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire.
Following a crunch meeting on Monday, REGSEC directed the District Security Council (DISEC) to immediately dispatch relief items to displaced residents sheltering at the local police station.
The Ghana Red Cross has also been tasked with providing tents to house affected families.
In a bid to restore calm, REGSEC further resolved to hold a joint mediation meeting in Damongo on Tuesday with the two rival factions and all stakeholder groups within the district.
Earlier, Savannah Regional NADMO Director, Mahama Zakaria, urged the feuding parties to give peace a chance, warning that the clashes were straining resources already earmarked for disaster preparedness ahead of the Bagre Dam spillage.
Authorities say security in the area will continue to be reinforced as mediation efforts get underway.
