The Mental Health Authority is concerned about rising suicide cases in the country, revealing that more than 1,600 people have attempted to take their lives in the past 18 months.
According to data from the District Health Information Management System, 1,174 suicide attempts were recorded in 2024, in addition to 475 attempts in the first half of 2025.
The country also lost 134 lives to suicide last year, representing a 40 per cent increase compared to 2023.
"According to data from the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS), Ghana
lost 134 lives to suicide in 2024, a 40% increase from 2023, while 1,174 people attempted suicide. In the first half of 2025 alone, 475 attempts have been reported.
Dr. Dordoye stressed that behind each statistic is a life cut short and a family devastated, calling for urgent action," disclosed in a press statement issued to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day.
Speaking at an event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2025, the Acting Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr Eugene K. Dordoye, described the statistics as deeply worrying.
“Behind each statistic is a life cut short and a family devastated,” he said. “These figures call for urgent action.”
Dr Dordoye emphasised the need to intensify public education, strengthen community support systems, and train frontline workers to identify early warning signs.
He also underscored the importance of sustainable funding for suicide prevention programmes, and called for stronger partnerships between government, civil society, and communities.
He appealed to the media to report responsibly on suicide, avoiding sensationalism and instead highlighting resilience and available helplines. “Be partners in hope, not amplifiers of despair,” he urged.
