Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged delegates to retain him as the party’s flagbearer, arguing that consistency in leadership is the surest path to victory in the 2028 elections.
Addressing delegates at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, September 10, Dr Bawumia pointed to Ghana’s electoral history, noting that every president in the Fourth Republic had handed over to someone they had previously contested against.
He said this pattern underscores the importance of keeping faith with a candidate over successive election cycles.
“History is clear. Former President Kufuor was retained after losing and he eventually won. President Mills lost twice but was kept, and he won on his third attempt. Former President Akufo-Addo lost two elections before his victory in 2016. Even President Mahama, after two defeats, was maintained and won in 2024. This proves that consistency pays,” Dr Bawumia stated.
He stressed that the NPP must remain united and build on the political investment already made in his candidacy.
“I am the most marketed, most prepared and most winnable candidate. Every Ghanaian knows who Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is. My temperament, character and unifying nature are well established. On 31 January 2026, let us secure the benefits of consistency and set the NPP on the path to reclaim power in 2028,” he said.
Dr Bawumia’s comments came at the start of a three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, during which he is engaging Constituency Executives as part of preparations for the upcoming flagbearer election.
Dr Bawumia campaign team explained that the tour will pave the way for direct engagements with delegates at the polling station level across the country.
