An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Stephen Namtey, a 44-year-old driver, into police custody for allegedly robbing a man of a Kia Rhino truck at Amasaman Junction.
Namtey is facing charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
He pleaded guilty with an explanation, but the court, presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, ruling that his explanation constituted a defence in law.
He is to reappear before the court on September 18.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, leading the prosecution, told the court that the complainant, Abdul Jalilu, a driver residing at Abossey Okai Zongo, was in search of a vehicle when he came across the truck, which had a "for sale" sign with a contact number.
In July, the truck owner, a prosecution witness, had placed the sign on the vehicle. Jalilu then contacted Namtey, who was posing as the seller, and arranged to meet him at Amasaman Junction for an inspection.
On August 30, Jalilu, accompanied by his mechanic, met Namtey and, after negotiations, agreed to buy the vehicle for GH₵ 85,000.
Namtey received payment and handed over the truck documents. The prosecution said Namtey requested to accompany the complainant to Suhum, to which Jalilu agreed.
However, during the journey, three men stopped the vehicle. Namtey allegedly convinced Jalilu to pick them up, claiming they were his colleagues.
Upon stopping, Jalilu and his mechanic were forcibly dragged out of the truck by the men, with Namtey’s assistance.
The group then fled with the vehicle. Namtey was arrested on September 9 in possession of the stolen truck.
During investigations, he admitted meeting Jalilu but denied selling the vehicle to him. Efforts are ongoing to arrest Namtey’s accomplices, who are currently at large.
