New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence that the party can reclaim power in the 2028 general elections if it unites and mobilises its supporters effectively.
Dr. Bawumia said the NPP’s loss in the 2024 polls was not due to the strength of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), but rather voter apathy within the party’s own ranks.
“I am confident that, by the grace of God, if we resolve our internal issues and go out to vote, we will win the next election,” he declared at the launch of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15.
Dr. Bawumia cited figures from the 2024 elections, revealing that over 2.1 million NPP supporters who voted in 2020 did not turn up at the polls in 2024, a development he believes cost the party dearly.
According to him, the NDC’s victory margin, approximately 1.7 million votes, was smaller than the number of NPP supporters who abstained, underscoring his argument that the loss was self-inflicted.
“If our 2.1 million members had turned out, we would have won. That is why I said it wasn’t the NDC that won the election, it was the NPP that lost it,” Dr. Bawumia added.
He therefore urged party faithful to set aside their differences, rebuild trust, and commit to voter mobilisation efforts ahead of the next general elections.
