The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the GHS, under the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (PPMED), has been honoured with a Special Recognition Award.
This is for its outstanding leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing digital transformation within Ghana’s health sector.
The award was presented by the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, during the 2025 Senior Managers Meeting (SMM) held at the Mensvic Hotel in Accra.

The meeting, themed “Resetting Healthcare Delivery for an Effective, Accountable and Sustainable Health System,” brought together senior managers and stakeholders from across the country to review performance and chart new strategies for health sector improvement.
The recognition highlights the ICT Department’s pivotal role in driving the Service’s digitalisation agenda aimed at modernising healthcare operations through technology-driven systems and data solutions.
The ceremony was graced by distinguished national figures, including Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle Constituency; Prof. Newton Binka, Chairman of the GHS Council; and Mark Kurt Nawaane, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, who jointly commended the ICT Department for its innovation and contribution to improving health service delivery.
The award also reflects the visionary leadership of the PPMED Directorate and the strategic direction provided by its ICT Department under the guidance of Mr Hammond N. Sarkwah, Deputy Director of ICT.
His innovation and coordination have been instrumental in implementing digital systems that are transforming healthcare delivery across Ghana.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Director of PPMED and the departmental team, he expressed appreciation to management and partners for their continuous support and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to advancing Ghana’s digital health transformation.
“This award is a proud moment for our team and a validation of years of hard work, collaboration, and innovation,” said Mr Hammond N. Sarkwah, Deputy Director of ICT, GHS.

“Our goal has always been to create sustainable, interoperable digital systems that strengthen health delivery and empower providers to make informed, data-driven decisions at every level.”
Over the years, the ICT Department has implemented several transformative initiatives, including digital data management systems, service delivery applications, logistics management platforms, continuous professional development and e-learning systems, and national connectivity projects; all aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making across the health system.
This recognition underscores the department’s leadership in leveraging technology to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide, a crucial step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage and positioning Ghana as a leader in digital health innovation across Africa.
