Asante Kotoko has been knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 5–1 thrashing by Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca on Friday night.
The result means Kotoko lost 6–1 on aggregate, having already suffered a 1–0 defeat in the first leg in Accra last Sunday.
Wydad showed their class from the start, controlling the game and creating several chances. They opened the scoring early, but Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil gave fans a brief moment of joy when he headed in an equaliser in the 19th minute.
That was as good as it got for the Porcupine Warriors. The home team responded in style, scoring four more goals through Hamza Hannouri, Stephane Aziz Ki, Thembinkosi Lorch, Oussama Zemraoui, and Mohammed Bouchouari to seal an emphatic victory and secure their place in the group stage.
For Kotoko, the result was a tough lesson. Despite showing some fight early on, they struggled to match Wydad’s speed, skill, and finishing.
Abdul Karim Zito will now turn his focus to the Ghana Premier League, hoping to lift the team’s spirit and get their season back on track.
They have outstanding games against Young Apostles and Vision FC after missing matchday 6 and 7 due to the CAF inter-club assignment.
