The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has called for justice, compassion, and national healing following the tragic incident at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
This follows reports by Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, that 34 casualties were recorded, of whom six have been confirmed dead, five remain in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 12 are in fairly critical condition, while the remaining are stable and under observation.
In a statement issued from their Plenary Assembly in Damongo and signed by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC, the Bishops expressed profound sorrow over the heartbreaking tragedy, which resulted in multiple casualties.
They extended condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the eternal rest of the departed and the swift recovery of all who were injured.
“As shepherds of the Church in Ghana, we stand in prayerful solidarity with the affected families who mourn, the wounded who struggle to heal, and all who have been shaken by this loss,” the statement read.
They further prayed that God would grant rest to the departed, comfort to the afflicted, and wisdom to national leaders, adding that "may justice and compassion guide our response and bring healing and peace to our land."
The Bishops reaffirmed the Church’s solidarity with the victims and their families, urging the nation to uphold the sanctity of human life and embrace systems that promote accountability, discipline, and the common good.
